Long ball helps Blue Hawks take two from Yellow Jackets

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks picked up a pair of five inning wins over Black Hills State University on Monday (Apr. 21).  Dickinson State rolled to a 13-0 victory, propped by four homeruns, before dropping the Yellow Jackets 8-0 in game two.  Dickinson State is now 30-12 on the season.

Regan Lawrence tossed a three-hit shutout for the Blue Hawks.

In the bottom of the first inning the Blue Hawks' offense opened up.  Rebecca Lopez doubled to lead off.  Monique Yslas laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Lopez to third.  Lopez would score on an error by Kathrine Drake.  Lindsey Sullivan then roped a double to scoreAlex Vargas.  Rebecca Lawrence later singled home Brianna Grayson, before scoring on a double by Janell LaRont.  Justeena Gutierrez singled to score LaRont.  Kailey Olcott then smashed a two-run blast to center on a full count to give the Blue Hawks a 7-0 advantage.

Dickinson State pushed across four more runs in the second inning.  Vargas took a 1-1 offering to left center with one out for a solo homerun.  The dinger was her fourth of the season, tying Sullivan for the team lead.  Sullivan doubled to left and then traded places with Grayson who roped a double to right.  LaRont came to the plate with two outs and a runner on.  She took a 3-2 offering over the left field porch for an 11-0 lead. 

The third inning saw more offense from the Blue Hawks.  Sullivan took a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence for a two-run homerun, taking the solo team lead with five homeruns. 

Sullivan finished 3-for-3 with three runs driven in.  Grayson also finished a perfect 3-for-3 and drove in a run.  LaRont scored twice, went 2-for-2, and drove in three.  Olcott notched a round tripper and two runs batted in.  Vargas also had a homerun and two RBIs.  Lawrence and Gutierrez also drove in a run each.  All nine starting hitters for the Blue Hawks scored at least one run.  Lawrence allowed just three hits and struck out seven.

Tiffany Morgan got the start in game two and pitched a six-hit shutout.

The Yellow Jackets managed to load the bases on a pair of hits, and a hit by pitch, in the first inning.  Morgan got Savannah Eckhardt to strike out, before forcing Alexis Shaffer to ground out to strand all three runners.

A one-out double by Yslas was followed by a double from Vargas to bring home Yslas and the game's first run.  A single from Sullivan was followed by an error by Ryan Cook that brought home Vargas, allowed Grayson to reach base, and Sullivan to advance to second.  The Blue Hawks left the first inning with a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning Olcott was hit by a pitch to leadoff.  Lopez drove her in with a double to center.  Yslas reached base on Kaitlin Farrar's wild throw.  Lopez scored on the throw.  After a ground out Sullivan, Grayson, and Lawrence reach on three consecutive walks to load the bases.  Morgan then drew the fourth consecutive walk to force home Sullivan.  The Yellow Jackets would get out of the inning, but not before the Blue Hawks took a 5- 0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth Gutierrez led off with a single to right.  Olcott laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance her to second.  A double from Lopez scored Gutierrez.  Yslas grounded out to advance Lopez to third.  She was driven in on a single to center from Vargas.  Sullivan then roped a walk-off double that scored Vargas, giving Dickinson State an 8-0 lead.

Lopez and Vargas each had a pair of hits, runs scored, and RBIs.  Yslas and Sullivan had two hits and a run driven in each.  Morgan struck out five hitters.

Dickinson State will be back in action on Wednesday (Apr. 24) when they travel to Jamestown for a doubleheader.
