Blue Hawks swept in season opening doubleheader

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks were swept in their season opening doubleheader on Sunday (Mar. 9) by Grand View University.  Dickinson State dropped game one in eight innings, 5-4.  The Blue Hawks fell in game two, 9-1.

Dickinson State sent Regan Lawrence to the circle in game one.  Grand View countered with Abbey Wilmes. 

The Blue Hawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning.  With one outRebecca Lopez singled to center, followed by a single by Kailey Olcott.  Lindsey Sullivansingled to left advancing the runners, but a misplay by Kendra Tott allowed Lopez to score and give Dickinson State a 1-0 advantage.

Grand View got the run back immediately in the top of the third.  A double by Dani Hubbard and a single from Justina Glick set up Jessica Grochala's RBI double to tie things up, 1-1.

In the bottom of the fourth Dickinson State struck again.  Lopez led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Olcott drew a walk to put runners on first and second.  Sullivan laid down a sacrifice to advance the runners. Tiffany Morgan drove in Lopez with a single to give Dickinson State a 2-1 advantage.

The Blue Hawks tallied again in the fifth. Janell LaRont led off with a single and then stole second, before advancing to third on a passed ball.  Alex Vargas singled to drive in LaRont and a 3-1 lead.  Lopez reached on a fielder's choice and would come around to score on an error by Grochala.

Grand View wouldn't go quietly.  In the top of the sixth they tallied twice to bring the score to 4-3.  Cari Smith led off with a solo home run.  A one out single from Tott was followed by a walk from pinch hitter Savannah Bice.  Dani Hubbard then ran for Bice and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Caitlyn Carmichael singled to and drove in Tott.  McKenna Kostelecky was called on to replace Lawrence.  Kostelecky recorded a fielder's choice and rolled a double play to end the inning. 

In the top of the seventh, trailing by a run Grand View shortstop Grochala clubbed a solo homerun to tie the game at 4-4.

In the top of the eighth, Smith was placed on second in accordance with the international tie breaker rule.  Devin Brown sacrificed her over with a bunt.  Tott singled sharply to left, but the runner could not score.  With runners on the corners and one out, Hubbard doubled to drive home Smith and give Grand View a 5-4 lead.

Jenifer Huebner was placed on second to begin the bottom half of the eighth inning.    Justeena Gutierrez sacrificed her over.  Back to back groundouts ended the Blue Hawks' scoring opportunity and preserved the 5-4 win for Grand View.

Kostelecky (0-1) was charged with the loss.  She threw 2.2 innings in relief and allowed two runs, one of which was earned.  Lopez was 3-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs.  Vargas and Morgan each drove in a run.  Dickinson State totaled nine hits in game one.

A huge first inning propelled Grand View to a win in game number two.  Kostelecky (0-2) took the ball to start in game two and was roughed up, allowing four runs and two hits in one-third of an inning.

LaRont came on in relief and scattered six hits, five runs (two earned), and four strikeouts over four innings of work. 

Grand View put up six runs in the first, courtesy of four hits and one error.  They also tallied two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

The Blue Hawks lone run came in the top of the fifth inning, when LaRont clubbed a solo homerun.  Gutierrez was 2-for-2 at the plate.

Dickinson State will be back on the field on Monday (Mar. 10) for a doubleheader against Doane College.
