DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks took two games from Valley City State University on Friday (Apr. 18). Dickinson State improved to 26-12 with the 7-6 and 5-3 victories.
In the first game a pair of big innings elevated the Blue Hawks to a 7-6 win.
In the top of the second inning Lindsey Sullivan led off with a double. Brianna Graysonexchanged places, roping a double to drive in Sullivan. A wild throw allowed Grayson to advance and score. Justeena Gutierrez then hit a two-out solo homerun to give Dickinson State a 3-0 lead.
After a four run inning from Valley City the Blue Hawks offense went back to work in the top of the fifth inning. A one-out triple by Rebecca Lopez was followed by a single fromMonique Yslas to tie the game at 4-4. Alex Vargas singled to put two runners aboard. Sullivan followed Vargas with a single and Yslas came across to score. Morgan Glowa came on as a pinch-runner for Sullivan. A bobble allowed Grayson to reach and loaded the bases. Vargas scored on an error, while Glowa and Grayson advanced to second and third with two outs. A passed ball allowed Glowa to score and give the Blue Hawks a 7-4 lead.
The Vikings would score twice in the bottom of the seventh, but it would not be enough.
Regan Lawrence went the distance for the Blue Hawks, allowing six runs and eight hits. She struck out seven hitters. The Blue Hawks had seven different hitters notch at least one hit. Sullivan finished 3-for-3 with one run batted in and a run scored. Grayson had a hit, a run scored, and a run driven in. Gutierrez was 3-for-3 with a solo blast. Seven different players came across the plate to score in game one.
The Blue Hawks' offense scored in four separate innings, including two in the seventh, to pick up a 5-3 victory over Valley City.
Lopez led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Yslas. Vargas roped a one-out single to score Lopez and give Dickinson State a 1-0 lead.
Valley City got the run back in the bottom of the second inning, but the Blue Hawks would break the tie again. In the top of the third inning Yslas took the first pitch she saw and crushed it for a solo homerun, giving the Blue Hawks a 2-1 advantage.
The Vikings took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third, propped up by a pair of errors.
The lead would not stand for long. A two-out single by McKenzie Kenobbie drove home Gutierrez and tied the game at 3-3.
Both offenses would remain quiet until the top of the seventh. A two-out single by Vargas kept the Blue Hawks' chances alive. Sullivan followed her with a two-run homerun to give the Blue Hawks a 5-3 lead.
Tiffany Morgan went the distance for the Blue Hawks. She allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits. Yslas, Vargas, and Kenobbie each drove in a run. Sullivan drove in a pair. Five different Blue Hawks scored en route to the 5-3 victory.
The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Saturday (Apr. 19) when they host the Vikings. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
