DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks took home two victories on Friday (Mar. 14) against Aquinas and Robert Morris. Dickinson State took game one over Aquinas, 7-5, and claimed game two against Robert Morris, 9-1. The Blue Hawks are now 2-4 overall.
Janell LaRont got the call in game one and went 5.1 innings, earning her first win of the season. LaRont allowed just one run on seven hits and struck out one hitter.
Dickinson State tallied first in the top of the second inning. Rebecca Lopez doubled to lead off the inning and was driven in by Shelby Ries to give Dickinson State a 1-0 lead. The bats were quiet again until the fifth inning.
In the top of the fifth the Blue Hawks put two on the board. LaRont singled, then stole second and third. Monique Yslas singled off of Aquinas starter Caitlyn Hensel to drive in LaRont. Hensel's night was finished and Aquinas turned to Anna Kenny. Alex Vargas was the first batter she faced and drew a walk to put runners on first and second. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance with one out. After a line out, Lindsey Sullivan was plunked by Kenny to load the bases. A bases loaded walk drawn by Kailey Olcott forced home Yslas to give Dickinson State a 3-0 lead. Hensel would come back to the circle and end the threat with a ground out.
The Blue Hawks put up more fireworks in the sixth. McKenzie Kenobbie singled to lead off. Justeena Gutierrez sacrificed the runner over. LaRont singled to center to drive Kenobbie home. LaRont would then steal second. Yslas roped a triple that scored LaRont to put Dickinson State up 4-0. With Yslas on third, Alex Vargas singled to make the game 6-0 and signaled the end of Hensel's night.
Aquinas would strike back in the bottom half of the inning. Sadie Stowell started the inning with a single. Emily Corning put runners on first and second with no outs. Torie Lowe reached on an error that both Stowell and Corning to score. McKenna Kostelecky then came on in relief for the Blue Hawks. Kostelecky was able to end the inning and avert any more damage. The inning ended with a 6-3 Blue Hawks' advantage.
In the top of the seventh, Olcott was drive home on a Kenobbie single to make the game a 7-3 Dickinson State lead.
Aquinas would tally twice in the bottom half, but could not overcome Kosteleckly and the Blue Hawks, 7-5.
LaRont was 2-for-5 at the plate with one run batted in. Yslas was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Vargas, Olcott, and Kenobbie each recorded a RBI.
The Blue Hawks picked up another victory in game two. A monstrous second inning propelled Dickinson State in the 9-1 victory over Robert Morris (Ill.).
The Blue Hawks struck first in the bottom of the second, when Sullivan singled home Lopez. Dickinson State led 1-0 after two.
Robert Morris put one on the board in the third, but it would not matter.
LaRont led off the bottom of the third with a single and then stole second. She would score on a passed ball. Yslas reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single from Vargas. After Sullivan was hit by a pitch, Regan Lawrence hit an infield single to load the bases. Gutierrez singled to score both Vargas and Sullivan, pushing the Blue Hawks' lead to 5-1.
A two out single from LaRont plated two more runs for Dickinson State, but the Blue Hawks weren't done yet. LaRont would steal third and then, once again, come around to score to give Dickinson State the eight run advantage.
LaRont went 2-for-3, with three runs batted in, and two runs scored. Vargas had a RBI and two hits. Gutierrez picked up two RBIs and a run scored. Lawrence recorded her first win of the season. She scattered four hits, and one run, over five innings. Lawrence also struck out one hitter.
The Blue Hawks will be back on the field Saturday (Mar. 15) when they play Olivet and the University of British Columbia.
