Sioux City, IA- The Blue Hawks (15-3) couldn’t hold on to beat Morningside College (10-6) in the first of two games. The Hawks had many chances to put the game away but poor defense led to the loss. Regan Lawrence got the start and pitched 7.2 innings giving up 4 runs, 1 earned on 7 hits walking two and striking out 7. The Blue Hawks committed 5 defensive errors.
The Blue Hawks took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning after the teams had played to a 2-2 standoff in the regulation seven innings.
Morningside came from a pair of one-run deficits earlier in the game The Mustangs tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the 3rd and then tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth when Taylor Daas doubled and eventually scored on a throwing error by short-stop Alex Vargas.
Dickinson State outhit the Mustangs 10-7 in the opener. Alex Vargas led the offense going 3-4 with a double, 2 singles an RBI and one run scored.
In game two, the defense for the Hawks was much of the same from game one. Each team made four errors in the nightcap. Two of the Blue Hawk's errors came in the second inning when the Mustangs scored three runs without the aid of a hit to take an early 3-0 lead.
Morningside made two errors in the top of the third to help the Blue Hawks score five runs.
The Mustangs tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run by McKenzie Anderson.
The Blue Hawks took the lead for good, 6-5, on a solo home run by Vargas in the top of the fourth inning.
Vargas went 2-3 with a home run and three RBIs and Taylor Ursel was 3-4 with a double to lead a 10-hit Dickinson State offensive attack.
Alex Watson started game two going 3 complete innings giving up 2 runs on 1 hit. Tiffany Morgan came into relief in the top of the 4th innings and finished the game and recorded the W. Morgan gave up 7 hits on 3 runs, 1 earned.
The Blue Hawks will face Briar Cliff and Jamestown in Saturday’s action in the Morningside Invitational at the SYA Complex.
