Lawrence and Vargas Earn Weekly Conference Awards

MADISON, S.D. – Dickinson State (N.D.) swept the second edition of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Softball weekly honors, announced by the conference office Tuesday.  Alex Vargas was chosen as its Players-of-the-Week and Regan Lawrence was named Pitcher-of-the-Week by the NSAA conference.

Alex Vargas – Dickinson State (N.D.) – 5'8" – Junior – Shortstop – Riverside, Calif. – Vargas posted a batting average of .560 and a slugging percentage of .880 as Dickinson State (N.D.) went 8-0 record for the week in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games.  She was 14-of-25 at the plate with three doubles, triple and a home run.  She produced 14 RBIs (1.8 RBIs per game).  Vargas had at least a hit in each game, recording multi-hits games four times.  She had more than two RBIs in a game four times during the Tucson Invitational.

Regan Lawrence – Dickinson State (N.D.) – 5'9" – Senior – Pitcher/Outfielder – Stonewall, Manitoba Canada – Lawrence earned a 4-0 record and a save for Dickinson State (N.D.) last week in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games.  For the week, she posted an earned run average (ERA) of 1.33.  She shut out the last three opponents on the pitching mound, accumulating a total of 14 strikeouts (6 strikeouts vs. Denison and 8 strikeouts vs. Puget Sound).  Lawrence pitched 21 total innings for the week, giving up five runs (one unearned) on 15 hits.  She struck out 23 batters and just gave up six walks from the pitching mound.

Dickinson State (N.D.), receiving votes in the latest NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, went 8-0 undefeated record for the week in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games.  The Blue Hawks recorded a pair of victories over NCAA Division II Minnesota-Crookston and had recorded wins over Oklahoma Wesleyan, Huntington (Ind.), Marian (Ind.), Central (Minn.) and Puget Sound (Wash.).  DiSU is 14-2 overall record this season.

Valley City State (N.D.) finished their month of March schedule with a 6-3 record in the Tucson Invitational Games.  The Vikings lost to Oklahoma Wesleyan 5-4 in 10 innings on March 16, but reeled off with five straight victories over British Columbia (Canada), Mount Marty (S.D.), Huntington (Ind.), Oklahoma Wesleyan and NCAA Division II Minnesota-Crookston.  VCSU lost to Pacific Lutheran (Calif.) on March 20, but defeated Minnesota-Crookston for the second time.  Valley City State wrapped up the Tucson Invitational with an 11-2 loss to Central (Minn.).  The Vikings are 11-9 overall record.

Jamestown (N.D.) went 1-2 record in a three-game series with NCAA Division II St. Cloud State (Minn.) on March 19-20.  The Jimmies dropped the opener on March 19 by the score of 10-0, but defeated the Huskies 9-7 on March 20.  UJ wrapped up the three-game series with a 10-2 loss to St. Cloud State.  Jamestown is 11-10 overall record.

Presentation (S.D.) lost all six games during their trip in Kansas.  The Saints were swept in a four-game series at Kansas Wesleyan on March 20-21.  PC could not get a victory as they were swept by St. Mary (Kan.) 4-2 and 4-1 on March 22.  Presentation is 6-16 overall record this season.

Mayville State (N.D.) did not record a victory during their week in Tucson, Ariz., losing seven straight games.  The Comets lost to Mount Marty, Minnesota-Crookston twice, British Columbia, Oklahoma Wesleyan, Huntington and Central.  MSU is 1-13 overall record this season.

Dakota State (S.D.) is still searching for their first victory this season.  The Trojans were swept in a doubleheader at Briar Cliff (Iowa) 3-2 and 8-0 on March 18.  DaSU visited the future member of the NSAA conference Waldorf (Iowa) on March 21 and dropped a pair of games 11-3 and 8-7.  Dakota State is 0-9 overall record.

Looking Ahead
Mayville State (N.D.) returns back to action on Wednesday afternoon as they visit Dordt (Iowa) in a non-conference doubleheader.

Dakota State (S.D.) will play at Dordt (Iowa) on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader.

Dickinson State (N.D.) travels to Sioux City, Iowa for a doubleheader at Morningside (Iowa) before competing in the two-day Morningside Tournament.

Dakota State, Dickinson State and Jamestown will be competing in the Morningside Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at SYA Complex.

Presentation (S.D.) continues their road action on March 29-31 in Nebraska.  The Saints visit Peru State (Neb.) on Sunday, Nebraska Wesleyan on March 30 and Concordia (Neb.) on March 31 with each playing in a doubleheader.

Valley City State (N.D.) will be idle this week and won't play until April 3-4 in the North Star Athletic Association's conference opening weekend.
