WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Dickinson State University softball team competed in the Dragon-Beaver Battle in West St. Paul on Thursday March 3rd and Friday March 4th. The Blue Hawks went 3-1 in the two days and improved their record to 4-4 overall.
In game one on Thursday March 3rd, the Blue Hawks beat Minnesota State- Moorhead in a non-conference match up 8-1. Freshman pitcher, Amanda Flores pitched 7.0 innings giving up 1 earned run in the top of the 7th.
Offensively, the Blue Hawks led 1-0 after four innings and extended the lead in the fifth with four runs, three of which were unearned. They pushed the lead to 8-0 in the seventh. Senior Alex Vargas led the way going 3-3 with a single, double and a solo homerun. She also had 3 RBI's in the game. The Blue Hawks had 11 hits in the game.
In game two, Bemidji state Junior pitcher Jessica Yost dominated the Blue Hawks from the circle and at the plate. Yost pitched a complete game shut-out giving up only 2 hits, 1 walk and had 17 strikeouts, improving her record to 6-0 on the season.
For the Blue Hawks sophomore Alex Watson recorded the loss giving up 2 runs, 1 earned, 4 hits and 6 strike outs in 5 innings of work.
On Friday March 3rd, the Blue Hawks swept the day beating Minnesota State Moorhead in game one of the day 2-1 and Vitero University 8-0, both non- conference match ups.
Against Moorhead the Blue Hawks got on the board in early in the bottom of the 1st on a RBI double by senior Alex Vargas. They then got an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th going up 2-0. Moorhead's lone run game in the top of the 7th on a solo homerun by senior designated hitter Kristen Norby who was 2-3 on the day.
Freshman pitcher Abigail Brooks went the distance for the Blue Hawks pitching 7 innings, giving up one earned run on 4 hits, no walks and 4 strike outs.
Against North Star Athletic Conference opponent Viterbo University, freshman pitcher Amanda Flores got the win pitching five scoreless innings giving up three hits and striking out three. Alex Watson pitched the final two innings striking out seven of the nine batters she faced and recorded the save.
At the plate the Blue Hawks scored 8 runs on 14 hits. Junior Brianna Grayson was 3-4 with two doubles, a triple and one RBI. Freshman catcher, Brenda Cruz was also 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Alex Vargas was 2-3 with a homerun and three RBI's.
The Blue Hawks open its annual Arizona trip on March 11th against Olivet Nazarene and NCAA III UM-Dearborn.
