Vargas Named NSAA Softball Player-of-the-Week

MADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) announced its fourth edition of Softball weekly honors Monday.  Alex Vargas of Dickinson State (N.D.) was chosen as its Player-of-the-Week, while Kelli Fisher of Bellevue (Neb.) was selected as Pitcher-of-the-Week.

Alex Vargas – Dickinson State (N.D.) – 5'8" – Senior – Second Base – Corona, Calif. – Vargas posted a batting average .643 as Dickinson State (N.D.) went 7-1 record for the week, including 3-1 record in the NSAA triangular with Bellevue (Neb.) and Dakota State (S.D.) and a four-game series sweep over Presentation (S.D.).  She was 18-of-28 at the plate and scored 10 runs.  Vargas produced a slugging percentage of 1.429 with four home runs (all against Presentation), four doubles and three triples.  She drove in 11 runs.

Kelli Fisher – Bellevue (Neb.) – 5'9" – Junior – Pitcher – Yutan, Neb. – Fisher was outstanding in the circle as Bellevue (Neb.) went 7-1 record for the week.  In seven appearances, she went 5-1 record and recorded a save while posting an earned run average of 1.17.  For the week, Fisher worked 36 total innings and recorded 30 strikeouts and walked just three batters for an incredible 10:1 strikeout/walk ratio.  She held its opponents to .237 batting average and gave up 11 runs (5 unearned) on 33 hits.

Valley City State (N.D.), receiving votes in the latest NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, remained undefeated in the North Star Athletic Association conference play.  The Vikings opened their home schedule with a doubleheader sweep over Viterbo (Wis.) 6-1 and 3-0 on April 2.  VCSU extended their winning streak to seven games and raised their overall record to 22-5 and 6-0 NSAA conference record.

Dickinson State (N.D.), No. 17 in the national poll, went 3-1 record in the NSAA conference triangular in Madison, S.D, splitting two games with Bellevue (Neb.) and earning a pair of wins over Dakota State (S.D.) on March 28-29.  The Blue Hawks opened their home schedule with a four-game series sweep over Presentation (S.D.) on April 2-3.  DiSU raised their overall record to 24-7 and 7-1 record in NSAA conference games.  PC, which dropped a home doubleheader versus Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on March 31, dipped their overall record to 12-22 and 0-8 NSAA conference record.

Bellevue also went 3-1 record in the NSAA conference triangular in Madison.  The Bruins completed a four-game series sweep over Waldorf (Iowa) on April 2-3 in Bellevue, Neb.  BU posted the scores of 2-1 and 9-5 on the first day and 8-3 and 14-6 on the second game.  Bellevue improved their overall record to 15-13 and 7-1 NSAA conference record.

Waldorf took three of four games with Mayville State (N.D.) in their NSAA conference series opener on March 29-30.  Both teams split on the opening day while the Warriors won both games on March 30.  WU is 7-17 overall record after being swept by BU and 3-5 NSAA conference record.

The Comets swept the V-Hawks on April 3 by the scores of 7-6 and 8-4.  MSU is 10-13 overall record and 3-3 NSAA, while VU is 7-22 overall record and 1-6 NSAA.

Jamestown (N.D.) returned back to action for the first time since March 22.  The Jimmies swept Dakota State in a four-game series sweep in Jamestown, N.D.  UJ is 21-6 overall record and 6-1 NSAA record, while the Trojans fell to 2-10 overall record and 0-8 NSAA record.

Looking Ahead
Mayville State (N.D.) travels to Valley City State (N.D.) for a North Star Athletic Association conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.  On the same day, Waldorf (Iowa) visits Clarke (Iowa) and Bellevue (Neb.) goes on the road at York (Neb.).

On Thursday, Viterbo (Wis.) hosts Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) in a doubleheader while Dakota State (S.D.) heads on the road at Briar Cliff (Iowa).  Bellevue (Neb.) is scheduled to travel to Midland (Neb.) for a doubleheader.

The NSAA conference resumes on Saturday and Sunday.  Jamestown (N.D.) and Presentation (S.D.) will play in the NSAA triangular at Waldorf.  Dakota State will host Viterbo in a four-game series.  Valley City State (N.D.) travels to No. 17 Dickinson State (N.D.) for four games.  Bellevue returns home and host Mayville State (N.D.) in a four game series.
