2015-16 DSU Softball Seniors Recognized at Senior Luncheon; Vargas Named Loraine C. Schumacher Female Athlete of the Year

DICKINSON, ND- The 2015-16 Dickinson State University Softball seniors were recognized Wednesday at the DSU Athletic Senior Luncheon hosted by the Blue Hawk Athletic Department. Alex Vargas was also named the Loraine C. Schumacher Female Athlete of the Year.

Samantha Bessey is a utility player from Saskatoon, SK. 

Alex Vargas is an infielder from Riverside, CA. 

Monique Yslas is an infielder from Garden Grove, CA. 

Morgan Glowa is an outfielder from Brandon, MB.

All four seniors have been in the Blue Hawk Softball program for all four years of their collegiate softball careers.

LORAINE C. SCHUMACHER AWARD

The Loraine C. Schumacher Award is presented annually to the outstanding female athlete of the year at Dickinson State University.  As a long time professor of Physical Education at Dickinson State University with specialties in dance and swimming, Loraine Schumacher was always a strong advocate of women in sport.  Loraine received many honors as a leader in promoting Physical Education in North Dakota and the surrounding region.

Loraine passed away on March 15, 1986.  It is in her honor that we present the 2015-16 Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year Award to Alex Vargas.

Vargas was a four year starter for the Blue Hawks. She was also a four time All- Conference selection, Conference Freshman of the Year, 2 time Conference MVP, 2014 All-American, 2015 All World Series Team, April 6th, 2016 and NAIA Player of the week and numerous conference player of the week honors in her four years.

Alex is also a three time National Tournament Qualifier (4 Time yet to be determined) and has started in 201 games and counting, with a career batting average of .435, 66 doubles, 14 triples, 37 home runs and 240 run's batted in.

This season she has broken the DSU single season RBI record with 69 and counting, a record she set herself in 2014 at 59 and has belted a career high 14 home runs thus far. She currently is hitting .488 with a .900 slugging percentage.

She is a Nursing Major at Dickinson State University.
