Watson dominates day one at NSAA Conference Tournament

GAME ONE:

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) kicks off their conference softball postseason tournament Friday morning at the Players Softball Complex.  The opening game featured a pitcher's duel between No. 1 seed Dickinson State (N.D.) Alex Watson and No. 8 seed Dakota State (S.D.) Audrey Kosman.  The Blue Hawks held on to a 1-0 victory in the Bracket A portion of the conference tournament.

The only run of the game came in the opening inning where Dickinson State's Alex Vargas and Brianna Grayson with back-to-back doubles, giving the Blue Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Grayson went 2-of-3 at the plate with two doubles and drove in one run for DiSU.  Vargas added a double and a run scored.  Whitney Mesi, who came in the bottom sixth as a pinch hitter, registered a single.

Watson (W, 21-2) won the pitcher's duel after pitching a full seven-inning game.  She struck out a total of 13 Trojans batters in the game and did not allowed a walk.

Kosman (L, 4-15) led the Trojans with two singles.  She recorded the loss in the pitching circle after tossing a complete game.  She struck out seven Blue Hawks batters and gave up three walks.  Tatum Ronke and Shai-Lee Hill each added a single.

Dickinson State moves on to the winner's bracket of the Bracket A section of the NSAA Softball Postseason Tournament.  The Blue Hawks play at 4 p.m., while the Trojans play a loser's out game at 2 p.m.  No. 4 seed Bellevue (Neb.) and No. 5 seed Presentation (S.D.) is playing the second game of the Bracket A, which will determine the opponents for the next two games.

 

GAME TWO:

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Top-seeded Dickinson State (N.D.) used another pitching dominance by Alex Watson Friday in the Bracket A winner's game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Softball Tournament Friday afternoon at Players Softball Complex.  The Blue Hawks advanced to the Bracket A championship game after a 3-1 victory over No. 5 seed Presentation (S.D.).

Dickinson State awaits for the winner of No. 5 seed Presentation and No. 4 seed Bellevue (Neb.) Saturday.  The Bracket A championship game is set for 1 p.m. for a spot in the NSAA Softball Championship Game versus Bracket B, featuring best-of-three series.

The Blue Hawks strike first in the opening inning with a run scored.  Monique Yslas reached second base by PC's defensive error.  She advanced to third base after a passed ball.  Alex Vargas produced an RBI ground out to score Yslas to give DiSU a 1-0 lead.

McKenzie Bassett started the bottom second with a single and advanced to second base by Mckenna Kostelecky's sacrifice bunt.  Whitney Mesi drilled an RBI double to score Bassett to extend Blue Hawks lead to 2-0.

Bassett added an RBI single to score Grayson – who started the bottom fourth frame with a single – to put Dickinson State up 3-0.

The Saints ended their scoring drought with a run scored in the top sixth inning.  Kassandra Orozco hit a double to open the sixth inning.  She advanced to third after Jacque Trost's single.  Amber Ewert produced an RBI single to score Orozco as PC cut DiSU's lead to 3-1.

Presentation went 1-2-3 in the final inning as the Blue Hawks secured another pitcher's duel victory.

Bassset led Dickinson State with two singles and an RBI.  Brianna Grayson added a hit.  Mesi had a double and an RBI.  Vargas collected an RBI.

Orozco and Shelby Anderson each had a double for Presentation.  Cortni Mendoza, Trost and Ewert each had a single.  Ewert registered an RBI.

PC left seven runners on base compared to DiSU three runners on base.

Alex Watson improved her pitching record to 22-2 after a complete game victory for the Blue Hawks.  She allowed one run on five hits.  She recorded three strikeouts.

Kayla Reynolds tabbed the loss in the pitching circle for the Saints.  She gave up three runs (one unearned) on four hits.
