After the passing of Ashley Neufeld, Kyrstin Gemar and Afton Williamson, former Blue Hawk softball players in November of 2009, Phil and Bev Neufeld, parents of Ashley, had a dream. The dream was to build a softball complex in honor of their daughter Ashley in their hometown of Brandon Manitoba. The first committee meeting took place in April of 2012 and less than five years later their dream is becoming a reality.
Over a million dollars has been raised for the complex which includes four adult diamonds and four youth diamonds. Without the outpouring support from the community of Brandon, this dream could not have become a reality. The funds for the complex have been raised through various major donors within the community, grants, softball camps, softball tournaments, golf tournaments, dinner raffles and the Field of Dreams funding project through the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
On Saturday September 9th the Grand Opening of the Complex will take place. The Blue Hawks will take on Mayville State in an exhibition double header starting at 12:00 pm. A special tribute and ceremony will begin at 11:00 pm.
Head softball coach Kristen Fleury had this to say, “As a team and University we are honored to be a part of this day. The legacy that Ashley has left not only in her community but wherever she was continues to live on. The countless hours, monetary donations and support the community has given towards this project is unbelievable. Many great memories will be made on these fields for years to come. I want to thank the Neufeld family for continuing to love the Blue Hawk family and for making us part of their family and I want to thank Mayville State Softball and Coach Ashley VandeVeen for joining us on this special day.”
