Last second shot beats Blue Hawks, 64-63

Dickinson, ND -- The second game of a back-to-back with the Blue Hawks and Bisons ended in Manitoba's favor.  The Bisons were able to defeat the Blue Hawks on a last second shot by Morgan Cross, the final score was 64-63.  The Blue Hawks are 1-1 on the season.   


The Blue Hawks came out with a solid first half, that was capped by a three-pointer by seniorMariah Duran as time expired to give the Blue Hawks a 37-32 lead.  Duran recorded 11 points in the first half.  Both seniors Jess Bygate and Dawne Degel both had six points in the first.  The Blue Hawks nabbed 27 total rebounds in the first. Stephanie Gill scored 11 points in the first for the Bisons, going 7-for-7 from the field with three three-pointers.  The Bisons had 16 rebounds in the first.

The second half did not go the way the Blue Hawks planned.  A 52-41 lead disintegrated to 52-49.  With five minutes to go Stephanie Gill hit a three-pointer to give the Bisons a 55-56 lead.  With the score at 59-62, Ashley Kennedy drove through the lane to make the score 61-62.  Head coachMark Graupe called a time out with 1:31 on the clock and trailing by one.  Ashley Kennedy got the ball, drove underneath, and was fouled by Christiane Fischer, but not before knocking down two points.  The Blue Hawks now had a 63-62 lead.

Morgan Cross had other ideas.  With less than five seconds left the Bisons drove down the court and Cross was able to make a mid-range two to make the score 64-63 in favor of Manitoba.  

"It put a damper on the weekend for sure," head coach Mark Graupe said. "It is early in the season.  It is only second game of the season, we have time to make some adjustments."

Stephanie Gill scored 17 total points for the Bisons, while Vanesa DeVries added 13.  The Bisons shot 39% from the field and 56% from the charity stripe.

Mariah Duran had a total of 17 points, three assists, and two steals.  Sophomore guardTaRicka Linzy put in 13 points for the Blue Hawks.  Jess Bygate had a game high 10 rebounds.  The Blue Hawks had 47 rebounds and shot 42.6% from the floor.  

The Blue Hawks next game will be at home against Presentation College on October 28, at 5:30 PM.
