Dickinson, ND – Dickinson State cruised to its first Frontier Conference victory of the season on Monday (Dec. 2) over Rocky Mountain, 88-69. The Blue Hawks improved to 7-3 with the victory and a record of 1-0 in Frontier play.
Three different Bears had 10 points, but none had more than 10. Kayla Lucas, Megan Halstead, and Jayde Lefevre led Rocky with a combined 30 points. Mya Perrow-Donovan collected a team high 12 rebounds. Overall the Bears picked up 44 rebounds and shot 36.2% from the floor.
Seniors Jess Bygate and Mariah Duran, as well as sophomore TaRicka Linzy were head coachMark Graupe's core against Rocky, each player on the court for over 30 minutes. Linzy led Dickinson State with 22 points, but Bygate and Duran were close behind with 18 and 17 points respectively. Junior forward Ja'Lisa Gatlin was tough underneath the basketball, as she picked up nine rebounds. Linzy and Duran were both hot from beyond the three point line. Linzy was 6-for-11 and Duran finished at 4-for-7.
"Tonight we played really well as a team," senior guard Mariah Duran said. "We had a plan on defense and we executed it. We had chasers on their two high risks scorers, it took a lot of communication and we did it well. Everyone contributed on offense; multiple players in double digits will win games. This game showed us that we can win in conference."
Dickinson State was 6-for-10 in the second half from beyond the arc and finished with an overall shooting percentage of 47.9. The Blue Hawks also brought in 39 rebounds.
The next game for Dickinson State will be on December 11 as they play host to Valley City State in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
