Dickinson , ND – Dawne Degel scored 20 points, 12 from beyond the three-point line, as the Blue Hawks defeated South Dakota School of Mines and Tech., 74-69, in an exhibition game on Friday.
The Blue Hawks had their largest lead with 14:24 remaining in the first half, as they led by nine points. The Hardrockers would storm back and eventually take the lead by nine with 13:45 to play in regulation. Dickinson State rallied and was able to overcome Mines. The lead changed hand a total of eight times and saw six ties.
South Dakota School of Mines and Tech was led by sophomore Jessica Shull who tallied 22 points for the Hardrockers. Sophomore Alexis Long added 12 points, six of which came from three-pointers. The final player at or above 10 points for Mines was freshman Krista Showalter, who scored 10. As a team, the Hardrockers shot 47.2% from the field, including a 55.2% mark in the second half. Mines also made nine of 12 free throws on the day.
Dickinson State played their NCAA Division II opponent at the top of their game. SeniorDawne Degel put up 20 points and three steals. Senior Jess Bygate added 15 points and three steals. Sophomore guard TaRicka Linzy chipped in 12 points for the Blue Hawks and had three assists. The Blue Hawks finished with 17 steals, 28 rebounds, and shot 44% from the floor.
The Blue Hawks will be back on the court Friday, November 8, when they take on Johnson and Wales. They will also play Johnson and Wales on November 9. The game on November 8 is scheduled for 7 p.m.
