HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The Blue Hawks are set to compete in the Malika Sports Tours Hoop N Surf and Oahu Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dickinson State's first game is on Friday (Dec. 19) against St. Xavier at 4:30 p.m. (HST).
The Hoop N Surf Classic began in 2002, when Gene Steinmeyer and Marissa Maaske invited five NCAA Division II institutions to compete.
Over 140 schools have competed in events hosted by Malika Sports Tours. Four women's teams have competed in the Hoop N Surf Classic before winning a national championship. In 2004, 2005, and 2009, Morningside College (NAIA Div. 1) claimed championships. Washburn University (NCAA Div. II) did so in 2005, while Grand Valley State (NCAA Div. II) took home a championship in 2006. The final institution to compete in the Hoop N Surf and win the national championship in the same year is George Fox University (NCAA Div. III) in 2009.
St. Xavier is currently 10-1 on the season, defeating Robert Morris in their last game 76-62. Morgan Stuut leads the offense, as she averages 18 points per game. The Cougars average 82 points per game.
The Blue Hawks will play Menlo College on Sunday (Dec. 21) at noon (HST). The Oaks are coming off an 88-56 win over CSU San Marcos. Laurel Donnenwirth leads Menlo with 15.3 points per game. The Oaks average 75.3 points per game.
Dickinson State is 1-1 in their last two games, including a 99-52 win over Oglala Lakota University. Lorna Shepherd is the Blue Hawks scoring leader, averaging 13 points per game. Megan Klein leads the Blue Hawks with 6.6 rebounds per game. Dickinson State averages 59.4 points per game.
