DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks hosted No. 23 Mayville State on Wednesday (Jan. 21) in their North Star Athletic Association opener. Dickinson State came away with a 75-59 victory over the 23rd ranked Comets. The Blue Hawks are now 8-11 on the season and 1-0 in conference. Mayville falls to 11-4 overall and 0-1 in conference.
The Comets were able to post a quick 6-4 lead, but Hailee Farstveet tied it up with a bucket at 18:21. Roughly three minutes later, the Blue Hawks tied the score at 11-11 on a pair of free throws from Jalyn Klauzer.
Maville State then went on a 10-0 run, before Megan Klein converted on a three-point play. Klein's bucket signaled a shift in momentum, all to Dickinson State.
The Blue Hawks went on a 12-0 run. Klein recorded eight points in the run, while Paitton Herbst connected for the final four. Alyssa Lenter was able to put an end to the run at 9:06, with a three. Lenter's trey gave the Comets back a one point advantage, 24-23.
Farstveet converted a free-throw attempt to even the score, 24-24, with 8:24 to play. On the ensuing possession for the Comets, Joelle Ertl's shot was blocked back hard by Herbst. Lorna Shepherd notched a trey after the block, before Farstveet converted on a mid-range jumper to give the Blue Hawks a 29-24 advantage.
In the final four and a half minutes of the half, the Blue Hawks outscored the Comets, 10-4 to take a 39-28 lead into half.
The Comets' offense came out scoring in the second half, outscoring the Blue Hawks 10-7 in the opening five minutes to cut the deficit to 46-39.
Dickinson State got hot, going on an 18-0 run on six three-point shots. Ertl was able to get the Comets' offense back on the board with a free-throw at 10:20. It would not be enough, as the two teams both found a way to the basket on nearly every possession. Dickinson State outscored the Comets' 36-31 in the second half.
Jenna Lundon led the Comets with 16 points. Lenter finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Ertl picked up 11 points, while Andi Gayner finished with 10. The Comets finished with 36 rebounds, eight assists, nine steals, 13 turnovers, and a shooting percentage of 30.2.
Klein recorded a double-double, scoring 21 points and pulling in 15 rebounds. Herbst came off the bench for 14 points, while Farstveet notched 13. Farstveet also recorded two rebounds, one assist, three steals, and two blocks. Shepherd finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Dickinson State finished with 50 rebounds, 16 assists, eight steals, four blocks, and a shooting percentage of 39.4.
The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 24) when they host conference foe Dakota State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
