DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks move to 2-0 in North Star play after defeating Dakota State on Saturday (Jan. 24), 65-58.
The Blue Hawks opened with a 7-0 lead, before the Lady Trojans found their way onto the scoreboard. With the score 7-4 with 15:45 to play, Dickinson State went on a 9-0 run to make the score 16-4. Kendra Lindblad ended the run with a mid-range jumper.
The Lady Trojans tried to mount a comeback and head into the locker room even at the end of the first. With 2:39 left on the clock, Dakota State trailed 27-18. Erin Rabenberg knocked down a three, but it was answered by Hailee Farstveet who converted a jumper.
Jordan Hansen then made a field goal, but Farstveet answered again. Farstveet scored the final three baskets of the first half for Dickinson State.
The second half was more of the same from Dickinson State. They remained consistent on offense, keeping a 51-45 lead with 10:09 to play in regulation. The Lady Trojans would not go without a fight, they evened the score at 51-51 with 8:45 to play, on a three from Sharee Galbraith.
Alyssa Hildebrand knocked down a jumper to reclaim a two-point lead. BreeAna Olson converted on a jumper of her own to even the score once more.
Hildebrand then took a pass from Farstveet and drained a long-range three to give the Blue Hawks a 56-53 lead. She converted on another three with 3:34 to play, after a turnover by Kennedy Wagner, to give the Blue Hawks a 59-53 lead.
Madison Walford hit a two to cut the Blue Hawks' lead to 59-55. Paitton Herbst responded with a three, putting the Blue Hawks up 62-55.
Rangberg knocked down a three to cut Dickinson State's lead to 62-58. Courtney Hulstein fouled Farstveet, who converted on one free throw. Rabenberg was then forced to foul Hildebrand, after Lindblad missed a jumper. Hildebrand pushed the Blue Hawks lead to 64-58. Lorna Shepherd scored the Blue Hawks' last point with a free throw, after being fouled by Hulstein.
Rabenberg led the Lady Trojans with 17 points. Galbraith recorded 11 points and seven rebounds. Jayda Swenson recorded a team high nine rebounds. The Lady Trojans finished with 39 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 steals, five blocks, 18 turnovers, and a shooting percentage of 39.7.
Hildebrand led the Blue Hawks with 18 points. Farstveet recorded 16 points, one assist, one steal, one block, and five rebounds. Megan Klein recorded another double-double. She picked up 10 points and 12 rebounds. Klein also picked up three blocks and a steal. Dickinson State finished with 41 rebounds, 10 assists, nine steals, six blocks, and a shooting percentage of 35.4.
Dickinson State will be back in action on Jan. 28 at Jamestown. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
