FREMONT, Neb. – The new year brought the start of a new season for the Dickinson State wrestling team. They opened their season in Fremont, Nebraska at the Viking-Warrior Open, hosted by Midland University.
Hudson Buck made his Blue Hawk debut and came away with first in the 197-pound bracket. Buck picked up a 10-7 decision over Kyler Atwood and an 11-3 major decision over Brady Radik on his way to first place.
Seth Ehlang claimed second in the 149-pound weight class. Ehlang picked up a 9-0 major decision over Seth Stander (Midland), before recording a 2-0 decision over Parker Bohnannan (Oklahoma City). Ehlang then defeated Brandon Charbonneau, 6-0, before falling in the first place bout to Victor Hughes (Bethany), 2-1.
Sean Elkins took third in the 157-pound division. Elkins won a 16-5 major decision over Cooper Self (Midland) to open his tournament. He then recorded a fall at 1:43 on Austin Chancey (Unat. Nebraska). Chase White (Nebraska-Kerney) recorded a 7-4 decision on Elkins. Elkins then took on Self again and recorded a 19-4 victory. In the third place bout, Elkins defeated Tyler Nation (Unat. Augustana), 9-5.
Taylor Hodel claimed third in the 165-pound division. Hodel recorded a fall at 6:34 over Jamie Shawver (Oklahoma City). He then fell to Brandon Wilbourn (Nebraska) in a 2-1 decision. Hodel defeated Tanner Ogden (Bethany) with a fall at 2:55. In the third place bout, Hodel defeated Josh Eidson (Lindenwood-Bethany), 8-2.
In the 174-pound division, Tyler Brown took second. Brown defeated Mason Bender (Unat. Augustana) 4-1. He fell to Casey Powell (Nebraska-Kerney) in the final bout, 8-5.
Jonathan Solano took third in the 184-pound bracket. Solano opened with a 6-4 decision over Zach Hausman (Lindenwood-Belleville). He then fell to Derek Sivertsen (Oklahoma City) 10-2. Solano defeated Brian Spencer (Unat. Nebraska-Kerney) with a fall at 3:42. Solano then recorded a 5-2 decision over Taylor Baird (Bethany), before picking up a 9-2 victory over Clayton Wahlstrom (Unat. Augustana). In the third place bout, Solano notched a 3-2 decision over Zach Stodden (Unat. Nebraska-Kerney).
Dickinson State will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 10) in Hastings, Nebraska.
