Eight Blue Hawks Place at Hastings Cusatis Open

HASTINGS, Neb. – The Blue Hawks competed in the Hastings Cusatis Open on Saturday (Jan. 10).  Eight Blue Hawks placed, while three of the placers won their division.

Brice Gorsline finished second in the 125-pound division.  He fell to Mitch Maginnis (Nebraska-Lincoln) in the final match, 4-1.  On his way to second, he defeated Erik Gonzalez (Bacone College) 7-2.  He then proceeded to win a major decision, 12-3, over Jerry Stepps (Concordia).  He recorded a fall in 1:39 over Austin Boles (Northwestern Col.).  In the bout prior to the finals, Gorsline defeated Zachary Gracia 9-8.

Seth Ehlang finished third in the 149-pound division.  He defeated Dillon Scanlon (unattached) 10-5 in the third place bout.  Ehlang opened the tournament with a with a 7-0 decision over Justin Folsom (Jamestown).  He then recorded a fall in 6:35 against Seth Harrington (Nebraska). 

Sean Elkins won the 157-pound division with a 13-8 decision over John Svoboda (Nebraska).  He opened with a fall at the 1:24 mark against Drew Gray (NW Kansas Tech).  He then picked up his second pin at 3:25 against Jacob Paul (Jamestown).  Elkins recorded a 19-1 technical decision over John Hedge (Doane).  He then defeated Lane Blasius (unattached) 15-9, before heading to the final bout.

Taylor Hodel finished fourth in the 165-pound class.  He fell in the third place bout to Michael Nord (Jamestown), 13-3.  Hodel recorded back-to-back falls over Elias Parenti (Ottawa; 1:40) and Blake Joiner (unattached; 1:16). 

Tyler Brown finished third in the 174-pound bracket.  In the third place bout, he recorded a fall at 4:29 over Gabe Suthoff (Benedictine).  Brown opened with an 8-3 decision over Karl Breidenbach (Co. Mines).  He then recorded a 12-4 major decision over TJ Gudeman (Northwestern), before falling in a 3-1 decision against Kevin Corbett (Doane).  Brown then squared off again against Breidenbach and won in a 5-2 decision. 

Jonathan Solano won the 184-pound bracket with a 6-1 decision over Logan Kellogg (Grand View).  Solano recorded a fall at 1:11 over Matthew Hernandez (Jamestown) in his first bout of the day.  He then recorded a 4-1 decision over Randy Null (Northwestern). 

Hudson Buck recorded a 3-1 decision over Stephen Loosbrock (Benedictine) to take first place in the 197-pound bracket.  Buck opened with an 8-5 decision over Brady Radik (Nebraska), before recording a 17-0 technical victory over Jake Anderson (unattached).  He then defeated Kasey Crump (Ottawa) in a 12-5 decision.  His final bout before the finals was a 6-5 decision over Paul Wilson (Colorado School).

The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Jan. 16 for the Missouri Valley Invite.
