BRIAR CLIFF, Iowa – The Blue Hawks competed in the Briar Cliff Open on Saturday (Feb. 7).
Seth Ehlang took third in the 149-pound bracket. Elang opened with a 4-2 victory over Coltan Laganiere (SDSU). He then defeated Casey Glassgow (WNST), 4-0. Elijah Sullivan was able to beat Ehlang, 12-6. Ehlang then defeated Steffon Fasset (MSID) by fall at 3:46. In the third place bout, he defeated Brandon Charbonneau 6-2.
Sean Elkins finished fourth in the 157-pound bracket. He picked up an 8-0 major decision over David Kellogg (GV). He followed with a 16-2 major decision over Cooper Self (MID). He then defeated Tyler Nation (Unat.), 4-1. He fell to Dallas Houchins (GV) at the 2:08 mark. Elkins then recorded a technical fall at 3:14 (19-3) over Lane Blasius (Unat.). In the third place match, Elkins fell to Alex Mossing (Unat.) at 2:11.
Taylor Hodel finished second in the 165-pound bracket. He opened with a fall at 4:56 against Jonah Hoshino (MID). He then pinned Austin Helmer at 4:04. Hodel then recorded a 4-3 win over Michael Nord (JTN). He followed with a pin at 2:29 over Johnny Hopper. In the championship match, Hodel fell to Nate Stadeker (GV), 5-1.
Tyler Brown finished third in the 174-pound bracket. He opened with a pin over Nick Wise at 6:50. He then fell to Dylan Blackford, 2-0. Brown picked up a fall at 4:14 over Asaiah Dyer (MID). He then beat teammate Cole Bilbrey 9-1. Brown was no match for Joe Brown (WNST), who he defeated 15-0 at 5:16. He then recorded a fall over Nick Null (NWC) at 4:07. In the third place bout, Brown recorded a 9-4 decision over Lawton Benna (Unat.)
Jonathan Solano recorded a third place finish in the 184-pound bracket. In his first match, he fell to Austin Fehlhafer (CON) at 1:55. Solano then recorded a fall at 4:03 over Luis Rivera-Santi (Unat.). Following an injury to his opponent, Solano advanced to face Daniel Harvey (BCU). Solano pinned him at at 1:55 mark. In the third place match, Solano recorded an 8-1 decision over Clay Wahlstrom (Unat.).
Dickinson State will be back in action Wednesday (Feb. 12) at the University of Great Falls for a dual.
