Fort Dodge, Iowa. –Senior Cody Hilzendeger (Baldwin, N.D.) ripped off runs of 10.3 and 12.5 seconds to win both rounds and the average of the tie down roping at the stormy Triton Stampede. Last year's regional reserve champion helped boost the Bluehawks to their first team championship of the year by a scant five points over the Jackrabbits of S.D.S.U. Fellow calf roper Dillon Wickum (Sr., Minot, N.D.) was right on Hilzendeger's heels in the long go, placing second with a 10.6 second run. Wickum's short round calf nearly ran through his loop, but ended up snared by both hind feet. Wickum was able to free the feet and turn in a time of 23.9 seconds to finish fifth in the average. Another senior, Jordan Pelton (Halliday, N.D.) chipped in by placing second and fourth in the rounds with scores of 71 and 66, respectively in the bareback riding. Pelton's aggregate score split third. Sophomore Cameron Morman (Glen Ullin, N.D.) wasn't afraid to get muddy in the bull dogging. One of only five competitors to throw both steers, Morman placed fourth in round one with a 6.9 and second in round two with an eleven flat and finished third in the average.
The Ladyhawks didn't deal with the sloppy conditions as well as the men. Only Bobbi Grann (Sr., Sheyenne, N.D.) qualified for the short round. Grann split the long round three ways with a 7.1 in the goat tying and was 8.3 on her second run to claim fourth in the round and third in the average. Her points were enough to place the women fourth as a team.
The Hawks continue the weekend in Ames, Iowa for the Cyclone Stampede Saturday and Sunday.
