RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Dickinson State rodeo teams opened their season on a high note. The Blue Hawks competed in River Falls, Wis. from Friday (Sept. 12) to Sunday (Sept. 14). The men's team took second out of nine teams, while the women finished first out of nine teams.
The men were edged out by South Dakota State University by a score of 570-560. The women picked up 685 points, while the next closest team was South Dakota State with 305. Cameron Morman claimed the men's all-around champion with 220 points, while Bobbi Grann took home the women's all-around champion with 275 points.
Dalton Rixen finished first in saddle bronc riding with a score of 159. Rixen scored an 81 in the first round, before finishing with a 78.
Blake Smith took second in bareback riding with a score of 161, just one point behind South Dakota State's Nick Schwedhelm. Smith racked up a score of 77 in the first round and won the second round with an 84 point score.
Morman finished fourth in tie down roping. In two rounds, Morman compiled a total time of 29 seconds, including a mark of 12.5 in the second round. He recorded 70 points for the Blue Hawks in tie down roping. In steer wrestling, Morman came out on top of the leaderboard. He posted a time of 3.9 seconds to win the first round, before posting a mark of 6.2 in the second round. Morman earned 150 points in steer wrestling.
Jordyn Schaefer and North Dakota State's Shelby Schields finished second in team roping. The two recorded a mark of 11.5 seconds in the first round, before posting a time of 8.2 seconds in round two. Schaefer and Schields earned 130 points. Schaefer also scored 40 points in the breakaway.
Bobbi Grann finished first in barrel racing with a combined time of 32.57. Grann posted a rodeo best 16.25 seconds in her second go, earning 60 points. She picked up 175 points for the Blue Hawks in barrel racing. Grann finished third in goat tying average with a time of 16.2 seconds, but her 7.4 second run in the short go was the fastest of the weekend netting her 100 points in that event.
Teddi Schwagler won breakaway roping with a time of 6.6 seconds. She earned 55 points in the first round with a time of 3.6 seconds, before posting three seconds flat in the second round and earning 60 points. Schwagler took 175 points home for the Blue Hawks in breakaway roping and added 20 more in the goat tying.
Sadie Gjermundson posted identical times of 7.7 seconds in both rounds to win the goat tying average picking up 160 points in that event along with 25 points in breakaway.
Other cowgirls who chipped in include Michaela Kathrein with 90 points in barrel racing, Kristy Langseth with 20 in barrel racing and 10 in breakaway, Lacey Grann with 35 points in goat tying and Skye Schaper with 20 points in goat tying.
The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Friday (Sept. 19) when they travel to North Platte, Neb.
