Salt Lake City, UT -- The Blue Hawks traveled to Salt Lake City for a Frontier Conference matchup on Thursday, October 24. The Griffins would take the match 3-0, with set scores of: 17-25, 17-25, 27-29. The Blue Hawks are now 3-20 on the season and 0-11 in Frontier play. Westminster moves to an even 12-12 on the season and 6-5 in Frontier matchups.
The Blue Hawks dropped the first two sets by the score of 17-25, before gaining control in the third set. The Blue Hawks led 20-15 before Westminster closed the gap and tied the set.
The Griffins were led by Jovana Sisovic, who had 14 kills, and Alexis Aalona with 10. Emily Atkinson recorded 29 assists. Libero Kyndall Kordakis picked up 21 digs. Three Griffins were over 10 digs in the match. As a team, the Griffins recorded 50 kills, 46 assists, 68 digs, and 8.5 blocks.
"We had a tough time getting things going today. I thought Aly gave us a good spark on the third set and we got a little momentum going," head coach Jon Stenman said afterward, "Unfortunately we were not able to close things out after being up in the last set."
Freshman Aly Schieno had six kills, good for second on the team. Leading the Blue Hawks was senior Melissa Avila with seven kills. Senior outside hitter Linaya Schroeder also had six kills for DSU. Senior setter Kelly O'Connor had 20 assists and junior Libero Natasha Malana had 20 digs, both team highs. Braunagel and O'Connor each added 10 digs. The Blue Hawks totaled 28 kills, 25 assists, 59 digs, and 2 blocks.
The road trip continues for the Blue Hawks as they head to University of Montana-Western. That match is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, at 2 pm.
