Dickinson, ND – The Blue Hawks were swept by Mayville State, 3-0, on Tuesday, October 29. The set scores were: 18-25, 15-25, 22-25. The Blue Hawks fall to 3-22, while the Comets improve to 20-16.
A long rally in a 6-6 first set swung the momentum pendulum to Mayville State. The Comets picked up the point and would later take the set, 25-18. Junior Josette Glatt led the Comets with seven kills in the first set. The Blue Hawks had a tie atop the kill list, as seniors Linaya Schroeder andMelissa Avila both had five kills.
In the third set the Blue Hawks would generate a lead, but could not hold it. The Comets climbed back into the set, with both DSU head coach Jon Stenman and Mayville State coach Lindsey Johnson calling timeouts to attempt to slow momentum. After losing the lead the Blue Hawks would fight back to a 22-22 tie, before Mayville State put the set away.
"We've got to play better at the net," head coach Jon Stenman said. "We played a heck of a game defensively, but we need to block better. We had some really good moments, it's frustrating to lose a match like that."
Overall, the Comets were led by Glatt who had 17 total kills, more than half her team's total. Junior setter Katie Wangberg had 26 assists and 13 digs. Freshman libero Paige O'Connor led the Comets with 19 digs. Mayville State finished with 33 kills, 30 assists, and 60 digs. Mayville State committed only five attack errors.
The Blue Hawks were led by Avila, who recorded 19 kills. Senior setter Kelly O'Connor finished with 24 assists, 13 digs, and six kills. Freshman Morgan Lutz recorded nine assists. Junior liberoNatasha Malana led the Blue Hawks in digs with 23. Freshmen middle hitters Magdalyn Rauserand Kate Golding picked up two blocks a piece. Dickinson State finished with 39 kills, 34 assists, and 64 digs.
The Blue Hawks will take on Valley City State for their next match in Scott Gymnasium on Thursday, October 31.
