Dickinson, ND -- The Blue Hawks played a Frontier Conference match Thursday, October 17, against Westminster College. Dickinson State lost the match 3-1, with set scores of: 13-25, 25-23, 15-25, and 13-5. DSU is now 3-18 overall with a record of 0-9 in Frontier play. Westminster moves to 11-11 overall with a 5-4 record in conference.
Alexis Aalona led Westminster in kills with 11. Mayra Ramirez picked up 10, second on the team. Emily Atkinson had 43 of the total 54 assists for Westminster. Aalona had 20 digs on the night. She led in both kills and digs. As a team the Griffins recorded 60 kills, 54 assists, 59 digs, and five total blocks.
Blue Hawk senior Melissa Avila had another stellar night with 17 kills, a team high, and 11 digs. Her 11 digs were good for second on the team. Junior libero Natasha Malana recorded 20 digs, leading her team and tying Aalona for the match high. Senior Kelly O'Connor pickedup 20 assists. The Blue Hawks finished with 28 kills, 24 assists, 57 digs, five team blocks, and two service aces.
The Blue Hawks played a strong second set, recording 10 kills as a team. "We didn't take advantage of the mistakes that the Griffins made. They were able to capitalize on our mistakes and we didn't capitalize on theirs," head coach Jon Stenman said, "We have to bounce back tomorrow."
The Blue Hawks will look to rebound as they will play University of Montana Western tomorrow, October 18, at 7 PM. Both teams will be looking for their first conference victory.
