MITCHELL, S.D. – The Blue Hawks dropped their first two matches of the Corn Palace Invitational on Friday (Aug. 29). Dickinson State lost in five sets to Johnson and Wales (14-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 10-14) before falling in three to Dakota State (21-25, 16-25, 16-25). The Blue Hawks are now 0-3 overall.
In the opening match against Johnson and Wales, Dickinson State was able to take sets two and four. The Blue Hawks were led by Maddi Johnston, who recorded 10 kills. Brenna Hansen followed closely behind her with eight of her own. Tessa Sian also recorded seven kills and five blocks. Natasha Malana picked up 24 digs, while Shaylee Singleton recorded 15. Morgan Lutz notched 35 assists. As a team, the Blue Hawks had 37 kills and 82 digs.
In the second match against conference opponent Dakota State, the Blue Hawks fell in three sets. The match was a non-conference event. Johnston recorded eight kills, Hansen notched seven, and seven recorded six. Malana picked up 12 digs. Lutz dished out 19 assists.
The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Saturday (Aug. 30) for a pair of matches against Valley City State and Dakota Wesleyan.
