BUTTE, Mont. – The Blue Hawks fell in their opening matches of the Big Sky Challenge on Friday (Sep. 6) to Montana Tech and Westminster College. The Blue Hawks are now 0-8 on the season.
In the match against Montana Tech the Blue Hawks fell in three straight sets with scores of 14-25, 11-25, and 12-25. Tessa Sian and Maddi Johnston each had four kills. Miranda Kadrmas picked up three kills. Morgan Lutz recorded eight assists, while Ashleigh Aufforth dished out seven. Shaylee Singleton, Shelby Gustafson, and Aufforth each had a service ace. Natasha Malana led the defense for Dickinson State with 17 digs. The Blue Hawks finished with 15 kills, 15 assists, and 34 digs.
The Blue Hawks took a set off of Westminster in the second match. Dickinson State fell 3-1 with set scores of 15-25, 14-25, 25-18, and 19-25. Brenna Hansen and Kadrmas each notched 11 kills. Gustafson notched eight, while Sian picked up seven. Lutz recorded 26 assists, while Aufforth picked up 18. Gustafson picked up two service aces and Hansen recorded one. Defensively, Malana led the Blue Hawks with 18 digs. Lutz finished second in the match with 10. Overall, the Blue Hawks finished with 44 kills, 44 assists, and 55 digs.
"Brenna Hansen really stepped up and lit a fire under the team in set three," Head Coach Jon Stenman said. "Between her improved attacking and a tough serve, she really stepped up when we needed someone. And the rest of the team came along from the ride. We played with energy and confidence. And while we didn't win the match, we left the gym with momentum and something to look forward to tomorrow."
The Blue Hawks will be back on the court Saturday against Carroll College and the University of Great Falls.
