Riley Malcolm of Brantford, Ontario just finished his season at the 2013 Canadian Jr. Track and Field Championships.  Malcolm competed in the 800 meter run where he placed 10th overall with a time of 1 minute 54.44 seconds.  Head Cross Country Coach Mike Nekuda is excited to get Malcolm on campus.  "I'm very excited to work with Riley and see what he can do as a Blue Hawk."

Malcolm posted some incredible times during his senior season with the Brantford Track and Field Club.  He ran personal bests of 4:00.20 (1500 meter run) and 1:52.28 (800 meter run).  Riley's 800 meter time ranked him 58th in the United States this year.  "Riley is one of the top high school runners in both Canada and the United States.  He will make an immediate impact on our team and will help us reach our goals in the future" stated Nekuda.  On top of Malcolm's track and field achievements, he also qualified for the Canadian National Cross Country Championships and placed 38th place.

Nekuda credits Malcolm's hard work and consistency and also his Brantford Track and Field Coach, Cory Currie.  "Riley isn't coming from a typical American high school track and field program.  Coach Currie does an amazing job with his athletes and is a great coach.  Riley will have very little transition when he enters the DSU distance program because he's done all of the lifting, core work, and intervals in the past.  He'll step right in and be ready to go."

Riley Malcolm will only add to the success that the Dickinson State Distance program saw last year.  During the 2013 season the Blue Hawks were All-American and broke school records in both the Distance Medley Relay (9:59.08) and the 4 x 800 meter relay (7:32.17).  The men's cross country team was also ranked 17th in the NAIA last year.  "Dante Carter and Denis Patrick both came to Dickinson State and believed in the training right away and had a tremendous amount of success in their first year at DSU.  I fully expect Riley to do the same" said Nekuda.

The Blue Hawks start their cross country season with the 2nd Annual DSU Twilight 5k Time Trial on Thursday, September 5th and have their first full race on September 13th at Black Hills State University.
