DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks will take on a new cross country season, under a new head coach. Ben Shroyer has been named the Interim Head Coach. He replaced Mike Nekuda.
"The biggest challenge I am facing is juggling my new responsibilities as a coach and continuing to manage all my responsibilities as the events and conference coordinator of the Biesiot Activities Center," Shroyer said. "I didn't have the summer to recruit and prepare for the upcoming cross country season so it has been very hectic the last month putting everything together. Coaching distance runners takes a lot of time and effort with preparing individualized and specific workouts for each athlete/runner."
Aside from his duties as the interim head coach, Shroyer is also the coordinator of the BAC. Last fiscal year the BAC held over 350 events.
"Everyone is at a different levels of training and has different skill sets. Thus, the daily workouts have to be tailored to fit the individual athlete so that they have the best opportunity to succeed," Shroyer added.
Shroyer takes over two smaller rosters then in years past. The men are led Luis Meneses and the women are led by sophomore Ashly George.
"It's a long season, and we must focus on getting all eleven athletes to the conference meet healthy and with fresh legs," said Shroyer. "If we can, we should be able to compete with the top teams in the Frontier/NSAA Conference. We have four solid men returning from last year and a freshman who will make an immediate impact. On the women's side, Ashly George and Austyn Copp will have a good shot to advance to Nationals as an individual."
The Blue Hawks kickoff their season on September 4 with the 3rd Annual Blue Hawk Time Trial. The event is scheduled to follow Meet the Hawks at the Roger Huffman Track. The Frontier/NSAA Conference Championship is scheduled for November 7 at 10 a.m.
